I don’t know how many how many of you know that the majority of Hijras found in Mumbai are from Tamil Nadu! I found this very strange cause Hjras are people you most often spot in Mumbai, and I have never met one in Madras ever or even seen one anywhere else in TN. Anyway after I figured this out I always speak to them in Tamil whenever they try to get money out of me, simply saying no or giving them whatever else excuse they would buy.
There are two of them at the main Andheri-Versova-Juhu traffic signal who I now see everyday. They are not the garish, overly done up variety, but are simply dressed. I gave them the standard excuse of coming everyday and thus not going to pay you routine. One of them bought it blessed me and moved on. Then the other one (the bigger drama queen of the two) came and I told her that her friend already came by and went. So she’s like so does that mean that you won’t give me anything. I repeated the same - come everyday and not going to pay routine. She was happy that I spoke to her in Tamil, and then when she found out that I am from Madras, clapped and blessed me and asked me to get a saree for Diwali.
The next day as the light turned red and as my auto approached the red light I saw the first one. She came up to the auto then the other one saw me and squealed… she put her hands up and did a small jig. I was actually embarrassed thinking what someone around would think. Then two asked if I had breakfast, chatted with me, blessed me and left. They are my unexpected friends… people I am going to bump into everyday and who I have to be civil to. Thankfully they are not bad people so it won’t be hard for me to deal with this every morning.

Interesting choice of friends, lol. Jokes apart, most people aren’t so bad; it’s just that we don't give them a chance.
Ha ha... I saw the thin one again and again she did a jig. :)
if i were you i would be a little scared
Ramya - thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. But why should I be scared?
Well for some strange reason I also used to be scared of your unexpected friends- maybe because of their antics. Reckon, am not so scared now.
Hi,
I was reading ur blog posts and found some of them to be very good.. u write well.. Why don't you popularize it more.. ur posts on ur blog ‘To read is to travel without moving an inch’ took my particular attention as some of them are interesting topics of mine too;
BTW I help out some ex-IIMA guys who with another batch mate run www.rambhai.com where you can post links to your most loved blog-posts. Rambhai was the chaiwala at IIMA and it is a site where users can themselves share links to blog posts etc and other can find and vote on them. The best make it to the homepage!
This way you can reach out to rambhai readers some of whom could become your ardent fans.. who knows.. :)
Cheers,
Ray - thanks for dropping by and for your comment.
I did check out www.rambhai.com and found it very interesting.
